Create an SEO strategy

1). Define your target audience

a) Start from preparing a general description of your target audience in terms of demographics like age, gender, income, hobbies, etc.
b) Identify the biggest challenges that your target audience faces. Identify multiple challenges and write them.
c) Figure out how your company or its services can help the target audience solve its biggest challenges. For instance, if your target audience’s biggest issue is finding a reliable and cost-effective Laundry guy, see how you fit there.
Based on the information above, create multiple buyer personas. A buyer persona is a fictional representation of your ideal buyer. Frank is one type of target audience.
You can use the following template to fill the details to create multiple buyer personas for your company.
The important question is how you’ll get all this information about your target audience?
There are multiple sources.
Use social networks, forums, and Google Trends to find what your target audience is interested in.
Conduct surveys and interviews. This is the best approach because you get data from your target audience.
Spy on your competitors. This will be discussed in detail later.
2). Find relevant keywords
SEO is based on keywords, content, and links – mostly. Whether you’re getting help from San Francisco, Las Vegas, New York, or any part of US, a credible SEO consultant will definitely tell you this.
You have to prepare a list of keywords that your target audience inputs in the search engine’s bar. For instance, generate a list of keywords that your audience uses to find specific companies online.
There are several ways to identify keywords.
Ask customers. When you conduct a survey or an interview, ask respondents what type of search terms they use to find your services/products? All such keywords are your seed keywords.
Use a keyword research tool. Google Keyword Planner is the best in the game.
See what keywords your competitors are targeting and how much traffic they get for each keyword. Target same keywords.
Follow the steps below to find the relevant keywords for your website from Google Keyword Planner.
1. Create a Google AdWords account to access Keyword Planner. Click here to create your account. Follow the steps to create your account.
2. Once done, login to your AdWords account.
3. Click Tools from the dashboard and click Keyword Planner.
4. Click Search for new keywords using a phrase, website or category under Find new keywords and get search volume data.
5. Enter one of the seed keywords (as discussed above) to find new keywords in the search field. Enter the keyword in Your product or service.
6. Other settings are optional. For instance, you can use Keywords to include to find all the keywords that contain a specific keyword or phrase. This is though no recommended now.
7. Click Get ideas to find results that will look something like this.
There are a few terms that you must understand to fully understand this page.
Keyword (by relevance): The list of keywords that are relevant to your search term that you entered. Clicking on the tab will sort the keywords in ascending or descending order.
Avg. monthly searches: This shows the estimated average monthly searches for each keyword.
Competition: This shows the competition of the keyword based on how many bidders are bidding on it in the AdWords.
Keyword ideas: You’ll see two tabs: Keyword ideas and Ad group ideas.
The keyword ideas tab gives you keyword ideas.
Ad group ideas: The ad group ideas is a great tab where you can find more relevant keywords that can be used to find more keywords.
Click Download to download the list of keywords.
You don’t have to target all the keywords. Select keywords based on their competition (choose low and medium), choose long-tail keywords that you can easily rank for.
Convert these keywords into local keywords by adding your city. Example:

3). Know your top competitors

a) Run a search query in Google for the keyword. Do it for several keywords. The most repeated websites are your competitors. Note them.
b) Use SEMRush. Enter your website in the SEMRush search bar. Scroll down. It will show you top organic competitors and their position map. This is one of the nicest tools to find competitors instantly. Note them.
Find the top 5 competitors based on the results. Choose competitors that show consistently for all or most of the keywords that you’re targeting.
The next step is quite interesting. You’ve to spy on your competitors.

Estimated organic traffic
You have to analyze the websites in detail and see what they have been doing. For instance, find their best performing ads and see what keywords they’re using to driving traffic to their website. Add those keywords to your keyword list.
You can check SEO keywords your competitors are targeting. This is one of the best ways to find extremely targeted keywords for your website.
Also, use the backlinks to see what type of sites are linking to them. This information will be used at a later stage.

Compete for traffic statistics.
Alexa for traffic and other details.
iSpionage for monitoring keywords.
The Search Monitor for keywords.
Simply Measured for tracking everything about your competitors.
The competitor analysis will show you what your competitors are doing, what keywords they’re targeting, what types of ads they’re running, where they rank in search engine, what type of content is performing extremely well, and other details.
Create profiles of your competitors based on the analysis. Add as many details as possible and you find.
Competitor spying is a continuous never-ending process so don’t worry if you don’t find enough information about them at this stage.
